We Want The Plate To Be A Topic Of Discussion Again

We want the plate to be a reason to talk again

Interview with Emma Carter, friend of plates and founder of the home cook community

Interview with Emma Carter, plate enthusiast and founder of a home-cook community

– Emma, tell us how your interest in plates came about?

– Emma, tell us how your interest in plates first began.

Emma:

It all started at home. My friends and I often hosted dinners where everyone brought food – but we soon realised that the plates on which the food was served were as much a topic of conversation as the food itself. Someone would bring an heirloom plate from their grandmother, someone would bring a design classic they’d found at Cervera. Since then, I’ve bought most of my plates from there myself – especially from their range of plates.

– What do plates mean to you these days?

– What do plates mean to you today?

Emma:

Nowadays I see a plate not only as a practical object but also as an object that evokes emotions. It can tell a story, reflect a style or evoke memories. That’s why Cervera is more than just a shop to me – it’s a place where every plate feels like a choice, not a coincidence. Whether it’s a minimalist everyday plate or a showy festive dish, every plate has a role to play.

Today, I see the plate as not only practical but also emotionally meaningful. It can tell a story, reflect style, or bring back memories. That’s why Cervera is more than just a store to me – it’s a place where every plate feels like a choice, not an accident. Whether it’s a minimalist everyday plate or a showpiece for a celebration, every one plays a part.

– So it’s not just about how the plate looks?

– So it’s not just about how the plate looks?

Emma:

Not at all. Aesthetics are important, of course, but also how the plate feels in the hand, how it stands up to everyday use or how it fits with the food you’re serving. For example, Cervera’s deep plates are perfect for soups, while the wide shallow plates allow room for portion sizes. The choice is not only visual but also experiential.

– How do the plates appear at your events?

– How do plates play a part in your gatherings?

Emma:

We’ve had dinners where guests bring their own “story plate”. Surprisingly often they have been found at Cervera – either as a gift or chosen by us for a special occasion. The plates open up conversations and bring something personal to the table.

– Do you have a favourite plate of your own?

Emma:

Yes – a handmade ceramic plate I found at Cervera last spring. It’s not mass produced, but part of a limited edition collection. I use it for special occasions, and each time its shape and weight remind me that everyday life can be a celebration.

– What would you like to say to people looking for the perfect plate?

– What would you say to someone looking for the perfect plates?

Emma:

First think about the moments you want to create. A plate may seem like a small detail, but it makes a big difference to the atmosphere. Cervera’s wide range of plates will help you find just the right one – one that makes the setting more than just a practical thing.
